chartreuse de mougèreshe name Mougeres in romantic languages means : "land where the cysts grow".
The Mougeres sanctuary is built on the site of an old Roman villa where vines were cultivated. Fragments of Roman pottery and amphorae have been found in the ground and walls proving this. In 1328 the Caux city councilors asked the Dominicans to create a convent at Mougeres. The Mougeres monastery was abandonned in 1490.

he faithful from the villages around the area didn't build a new church until 1645. This is the current Notre Dame de Pitié (Our Lady of Mercy) church.
The monastery was closed in 1789 in the middle of the French Revolution. Madame de Maury, a pious woman from Pezenas, bought the property to save it. She then made a provision in her will so that her heirs would have to give Mougeres to the first monks wearing white that returned to France after the revolution. On 4 May 1825 the Chartreux take over the property. They left the property in 1901 but came back in 1935 to replant the vineyard.

he Chartreux ran the winery until 1977. During this period they planted quality grape varieties whose wines gave the winery its reputation. They also opened a wine cellar where they sold bottled wines from the winery to private individuals. The winery is currently run by the Lycée Agricole Privé Catholique Bonne Terre de Pézenas (a Catholic agricultural trade school). Mr De Saint Exupéry and his team work for the winery to let you taste and enjoy the wines from the Chartreuse de Mougeres Winery.
The Chartreux still own it.
